Greig Fraser (Class of 1993) wins an Oscar!

This week Class of 1993 Alumni Greig Fraser added to his already impressive list of awards and accolades with an Oscar!

Greig took home Best Cinematographer for his outstanding work on blockbuster movie Dune, which he filmed in a number of incredible locations including Abu Dhabi and Budapest.

We had the great pleasure of interviewing Greig in 2020 when he was filming The Batman in London, another exciting venture, filmed predominantly at night. Speaking with Greig, he was humble, thankful and genuinely so pleased to still be connected to our wonderful community through our annual award The Greig Fraser Photography Award, which he judges himself, taking time to look at individual student works each year. He said he had never dreamed this would be his path, that it was ‘slow burn’ but two very special teachers, Mr Robert Mau and Mr David Modra saw in him a skill that others did not.

Through hard work, innovation, passion and self-belief Greig is now an Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy Award winning cinematographer working on some of the world’s biggest movies and TV shows.

If you have some spare time you might like to take in some of his amazing work:

  • Dune
  • The Batman
  • Lion
  • Zero Dark Thirty
  • The Mandalorian
  • Rogue One

You can also read the interview with Greig for LutherLetter (Dec 2020, page 22).

There was a lot gained from talking with Greig Fraser, particularly this important takeaway:

“I have a firm belief that you need to keep doing stuff that challenges you. Pushing yourself and being brave with your choices both personally and professionally. Even occasionally feeling terrified pays off.”

Congratulations Greig on your incredible success.
