What is Luther College?

Mission statement

Luther College positively endeavours to provide the best education possible in a Christian setting where the whole person can grow and develop with confidence and dignity.
The College's extensive programs offer all students opportunity for spiritual and moral growth, service and social involvement, excellence in academics, the arts and worthwhile physical activities, to prepare them with confidence for their individual vocations and a Christian life.

Luther College is a Christian school

Its ultimate aim is the glorification of God through the equipping of young Christians for time and eternity, especially by nurturing students in a growing relationship with God in Christ. As an agency of Christian education it seeks to promote all aspects of personal growth and to help students develop their abilities to the full for a rich and meaningful life, dedicated to the service of God and man.

Luther College, as a Lutheran school, seeks to base all of its teachings upon the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions as a true exposition of Scripture. On this basis, it endeavours to set up and maintain a framework of Christian assumptions, attitudes and relationships which, by the power of the Holy Spirit, permeate and integrate its entire life and work and thereby help it to grow as a caring community.

In accordance with biblical teaching, it acknowledges the Christian home to be the primary and fundamental agency of Christian education and therefore seeks to work in collaboration with parents as they fulfil their God-given reponsibilities. More particularly, in developing the whole person, the School aims:
•    to nurture faith in Christ and a life of commitment to Him;
•    to help students develop values, attitudes and relationships emanating from and consistent with their Christian faith;
•    to provide a strong program of academic studies which covers as broad a range as possible;
•    to provide opportunities for enrichment in a variety of creative and artistic pursuits;
•    to promote the physical wellbeing of students;
•    to equip young Christians for a useful and dedicated life in their congregation and Church and to encourage fulltime service in the Church;
•    to equip young people to become useful and responsible members of society.

College Name

The College is named after the father of the Lutheran Church, Dr. Martin Luther, a 16th century German professor of theology.

In contributing to the reformation of the Christian Church, Dr. Luther had sought to remind the Church that we are put right with God by God's grace, through faith in His Son Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord - our own human good works cannot contribute to our eternal salvation.

The Lutheran Church has grown to be by far the largest Protestant church, with more than 70 million adherents around the world.

College Motto

The motto chosen for the College "UNCTIO EIUS DOCET" was taken from 1 John 2:27, literally `His anointing teaches us'. The translation for general use has become "THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OUR TEACHER".
The motto reminds us that, in a College such as Luther College based on a clear Christian perspective of life, all learning that is good and true comes to us from God through the work of His Holy Spirit.

College Badge

The College Badge contains four dominant features:
•    The College Motto in its Latin form appears at the base of the badge on a stylised scroll, and is a constant reminder that God's Holy Spirit directs all learning here at Luther.
•    The Shield of Faith represents the certainty we have as Christians that Jesus is able to protect us from all the troubles and challenges of this life.
•    The Open Bible reminds us that the source of all knowledge of God is God's living word found in the Holy Scriptures. Alpha and Omega (the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet) are symbols of the eternal God who existed before all things were created and will still be when this world no longer exists.
•    The Dove is the symbol of God the Holy Spirit who brings Christ to us.
